Inter(net) Space

Most of the time, when I think of the internet, I imagine the internet as outer space. The outer space is the space beyond earth. It is not empty but filled with things beyond even the human brain can comprehend. We may never know how big space is and we, as humans, are only a little dot compared to the size of outer space. In a way, we can look at the internet in the same way.

The internet is a connection of connected computers. The internet, at first, was used for connecting schools, for the use of research and well as government entities. Now, a large percentage of the world is connected and on the internet daily. We, humans, use the internet for social media, work, hobbies, play, education, discussions, politics, shopping, web searching, cloud services and even music.

Usually when I think of the internet, as well as many other consumers, my mind goes to the many services that consumers of the internet use like Instagram, Google, Facebook, Snapchat, Spotify, Gmail and even iCloud or AWS. Those services are like the planets in outer space. They are what stand out to me the most. And when people think of outer space, we think of Earth and the other planets that make up the milky way.

Although, there is SO much more to the internet. The internet contains many many many servers and different protocols and other “behind the scenes” work that most consumers never see or understand. And I see that as the rest of outer space.

Yes, that is very broad. But, both the internet and space are both so large and never ending. As a consumer, whether on earth or on the internet, we are such a small spec of dust compared to the extensive size of the both of them. This Youtube video helps you understand one human compared to the rest of what we know of what outer space is.

We may never know how large the internet or space really is. And that is terrifying.
